This dinosaur ROCKS!

Scientists uncovered the skeleton of what they believe to be a new dinosaur species in Madagascar, an island off the coast of Africa. As they were digging in the 100-degree heat, the radio played the music of Dire Straits. The music, they say, brought them luck in dicovering the new dinosaur.

The team therefore decided to name the new dinosaur Masiakasaurus (ma-SHE-ka-saurus) knopfleri, which apparently means vicious lizard knopfler. You guessed it. He's named after Mark Knopfler, the singer and songwriter of Dire Straits.

And, you are right again. Masiakasaurus knopfleri is a carnivore (meat eater), with an incredible need for orthodontia! Just check out his teeth! Scientists believe he lived between 65 million to 70 million years ago, during the late Cretaceous Period. He was small for a dinosaur, 5 or 6 feet long, weighing about 80 pounds, about the size of a large dog.

Scientists believe his bizarre teeth served two purposes. His back teeth fits the description of typical meat eaters - bladelike and serrated, pointing up and down. The front teeth are long and conelike - check it out - they stick straight out of his jaw! - ew! Scientists believe he may have used these to capture and eat insects, lizards, frogs, and other small critters.
